eSIM for Turkey: a practical guide for travellers
Why an eSIM beats a local SIM in Turkey, how coverage holds on the coast and in Cappadocia, and how much data a week really takes.
Turkey is a destination where connectivity is worth settling before departure, for two reasons. The first is that roaming here is billed at international rates for almost everyone. The second is less known: Turkey registers handsets by IMEI, and with a local SIM your phone can be blocked from local networks after a while unless you register it and pay a fee. An eSIM avoids that entirely — no device registration required.

The rule applies to handsets used on Turkish networks with a local SIM beyond a set period. Registration costs money and is done at the tax office. A travel eSIM works as a roaming profile on a partner network and falls outside the rule, so there is nothing to register.
That is arguably the strongest practical argument for an eSIM in Turkey, price aside.

- Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir — 5G across the cities, solid signal in the metro and interchanges.
- Antalya, Alanya, Bodrum, Fethiye — the whole resort strip is on 4G, with 5G in the town centres.
- Cappadocia — signal in Göreme and Uçhisar, gone down in the valleys on walking routes.
- Mountain roads and the Lycian Way — patchy; download your route beforehand.
- Bosphorus and island ferries — coverage holds near shore, breaks up in open water.
How much to take
Turkey covers very different trip styles.
- All-inclusive, one week. 1–3 GB: hotel Wi-Fi handles most of it, mobile data is for excursions.
- Istanbul for 4–5 days. 3 GB: maps run constantly, the city is big and you walk a lot.
- Two weeks on the move with photos. 5–10 GB.

Guess low and you top up the same profile — no new eSIM to install.
Before you fly
- Check your phone supports eSIM — the model list.
- Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi. The installation guide shows where to tap.
- Do not switch it on early: validity starts at the first connection to a network.
- After landing, enable the profile and its data, and turn on data roaming for that profile — without it nothing connects.
