Cyprus SIM card for tourists: is a local SIM worth it?

How to buy a SIM card in Cyprus as a tourist: price, passport, activation call. And when an eSIM is the easier option.

3 min read

You can buy a local SIM card in Cyprus, but it takes longer than most visitors expect. Here is how it works and when you can skip it.

Mobile operators

Cyprus has three main mobile operators: Cyta (Vodafone), Epic and Primetel. Prepaid SIM cards are sold in their shops in towns.

How to buy one

  1. Find an operator shop. In smaller towns and in the evening this can take time.
  2. Show your passport: you cannot buy a SIM without ID.
  3. Wait for a confirmation call. The SIM starts working only after it.

How much it costs

A starter pack with data costs around €20. For a one or two week trip that is often more than you need.

A local SIM makes sense if you stay in Cyprus for a long time and need a Cypriot number. For a holiday an eSIM is easier: install it at home and switch it on after landing.

In our experience, southern networks only reach the north close to the border.

In short
