eSIM for Cyprus: online from the moment you land
Which plan to pick for Cyprus, how coverage holds up in Paphos, Larnaca and Ayia Napa, and what to do before you fly so the internet works at the airport.
Cyprus is in the European Union, but if your SIM is not European, roaming here is billed at international rates rather than EU ones. The result is familiar: the phone attaches to a local network at the airport by itself, and a day later a charge arrives that nobody planned for. An eSIM removes the question. You install the profile at home, switch it on when you land, and your usual number stays reachable for calls and bank codes.
What to know before buying
Our Cyprus plans are data only, with no calls or texts. That is deliberate: voice abroad is rarely what people need, and dropping it keeps the price at a couple of euros a week. Your regular number keeps working on the other line, so bank messages and calls still reach you.
The profile is installed in advance, at home, over ordinary Wi-Fi. In Cyprus you only switch it on in settings. No shop, no kiosk, no queue.
Coverage across the island
Cyprus is small and coverage is even almost everywhere:
- Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Nicosia — solid 4G and 5G in town and along the seafront.
- Ayia Napa and Protaras — good coverage along the resort strip, though speeds can dip at the height of summer under load.
- Troodos — mountain roads and villages are covered, but gorges and hiking trails have gaps. Download your route in advance.
- The northern part of the island is a separate case: Turkish operators run there and a Cyprus plan does not extend to it.
How much data to take
For a week without video or tethering, 1–3 GB is plenty: maps, messengers, looking up places, a few stories a day. If you work from the trip, join calls or tether a laptop, start at 5 GB. We broke the maths down by trip type in how much data you need.
Guessing wrong is not a problem. If you run out early, you top up the same profile instead of buying another eSIM and reinstalling anything.
Before you fly
- Check your phone supports eSIM. If you are unsure, our guide to eSIM support lists the models.
- Buy the plan and install the profile at home over Wi-Fi. It takes a minute.
- Leave the profile switched off until you land, so the plan does not start counting down early.
- On arrival, turn the profile on along with data for that line. Data roaming has to be enabled for the eSIM — this is not your home operator's roaming, it is how the profile attaches to the local network.
In short
- Cyprus is outside EU roaming for non-EU SIMs, so budget separately.
- Data only; your home number stays with you.
- A week usually fits into 1–3 GB.
- Northern Cyprus is not covered.
