How to top up an eSIM instead of buying a new one

What to do when the data runs out mid-trip: topping up the same profile, how that differs from buying another eSIM, and when a new one is genuinely needed.

2 min read

The data ran out on day five of ten. The first instinct is to buy another plan and install a second profile, but that is unnecessary: there is already a working eSIM in the phone, and it only needs topping up.

How a top-up differs from a new eSIM

A profile is identified by its ICCID, a permanent number. A top-up attaches a fresh data allowance to that same ICCID, so nothing changes on the phone: no second profile, no QR code to scan, no lines to switch, no working out which of two eSIMs is currently live.

You only need a new eSIM in one case — when you are travelling to a country the current plan does not cover.

How to top up

  1. Open the site and sign in with the email you bought with.
  2. Find your eSIM in the list — it is labelled with the country and the data left.
  3. Choose a top-up and pick an allowance.
  4. The data is added to the same profile. Nothing to reinstall.

If you bought without registering, that is fine: the account opens with the same email the profile was sent to, and a separate password is not required.

When to top up early

There is one case worth not postponing: if you are heading somewhere coverage breaks up — mountains, islands, desert. Topping up is easier while you still have internet, because the top-up itself needs a connection, either leftover data or Wi-Fi.

That is why we email you when a profile drops below 15% of its allowance — so the decision happens in advance rather than after the signal is gone.

What if the validity expired

Validity and data are two different things. If the days ran out rather than the gigabytes, a top-up renews both: you pick a new plan and it takes effect on the same profile.

In short

  • You top up the same profile; no new eSIM to install.
  • The account opens with the email you bought with.
  • Top up before mountains and islands, while you still have signal.
  • We email you at 15% remaining.
  • A new eSIM is only needed for a country outside your current coverage.
